ARSENAL Ladies saw their hopes of playing one last competitive match before a three-week break washed out on Saturday when their Women’s Super League fixture away to Doncaster Rovers Belles was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The Gunners travelled to the game in confident mood having beaten Chelsea 1-0 to clinch the FA Cup in front of a record crowd at Wembley in their previous outing.

The players, including FA Cup match-winner Danielle Carter, went through a vigorous warm-up when they got to the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday, but it proved in vain as after a couple of failed attempts to bounce the ball, and a few sludgy steps, referee Jane Simms (inset) quickly called the game off.

Arsenal will keep their skills sharp by playing a friendly against American side Seattle Reign tonight (Thursday), but their next competitive match isn’t until June 26 – when they play Sunderland away in the WSL.
